RePowerSiC: Shaping the Future of Space at the University of Jaén

RePowerSiC proudly presented its groundbreaking advancements in wireless power transfer and deep space exploration to students and faculty of the Master’s Program in Photovoltaic Systems Engineering at the University of Jaén (Spain). Through a series of engaging technical sessions, we introduced the next generation of high-efficiency technologies that will drive future space missions, highlighting the transformative role of our SiC-based laser power systems.

Eduardo F. Fernández opened the event with his talk, “High-Efficiency High-Power Laser Beaming In-Space Systems Based on SiC,” offering a deep dive into how our work is revolutionizing wireless power transfer for future deep-space missions. His presentation emphasized the crucial contribution of high-efficiency laser technologies to powering spacecraft and remote systems across vast distances.

Following this, Manuel Peralta-Fuentes, from Universidad de Jaén, delivered “Energy Transmission Using Photovoltaic Systems on Planets and Satellites,” where he explored the enormous potential of the SiC technologies being developed within rePowerSiC. In addition, he underlined the importance of considering the optical characteristics of different celestial bodies when designing extraterrestrial photovoltaic receiving systems.

To conclude the series, Álvaro Valera-Albacete presented “Remote Power Transmission Technology Using Photovoltaic Systems,” focusing on the engineering challenges of long-distance laser power beaming. His talk detailed the variety of optical configurations for laser emitters and the complex receiver architectures (comprising multiple devices and optical elements) required to achieve efficient energy transmission across extreme distances.

These training and dissemination activities form a core part of our mission in RePowerSiC, by engaging with emerging experts and sharing cutting-edge knowledge, we are helping to prepare the next generation of researchers who will carry forward the technological revolution our project is enabling.
