The competition invited students from universities across Spain to capture a scientific image in which light played a central role, accompanied by a popular-science explanation of the phenomenon depicted. The winning entry was selected for its ability to combine scientific relevance with visual impact, showcasing how advanced research can also reveal the beauty of the physical world. 

Spotlight on the Winning Photograph: The Secret of Caustics  

Entitled “The Secret of Caustics”, the award-winning photograph was taken during one of the wireless power transmission experiments carried out within the framework of the RePowerSiC project. The image captures the fascinating phenomenon of optical caustics generated by a lens. Caustics are regions where light rays become concentrated near the focal area of a lens, creating intricate and striking patterns of light.

While an ideal lens would focus all incoming rays onto a single point, real lenses have finite thickness and spherical surfaces that cause different rays to converge at slightly different locations. This effect, known as spherical aberration, produces the elegant curves and bright regions visible in the photograph. 

The photograph not only highlights an important optical phenomenon but also demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of research within RePowerSiC, where expertise in photonics, power electronics, and advanced energy technologies come together to drive innovation. 

This achievement reflects the high level of scientific excellence and creativity fostered within the project and underscores RePowerSiC’s commitment to supporting and empowering the next generation of researchers. By providing young scientists with opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research and scientific outreach, such initiatives contribute not only to scientific and technological progress but also to the development of the next generation of research talent.
