RePowerSiC at G-Night Lugo: Bringing Space Innovation to the Public

On 26th September 2025, RePowerSiC took part in G-Night Lugo, the European Researchers’ Night event that transformed the Municipal Market and the Quiroga Ballesteros Market Hall into spaces of science, discovery, and dialogue. Organized locally by XuvenCiencia and AgroMar, the initiative mobilized more than 50 lecturers and researchers together with another 50 student volunteers from the Campus Terra of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). With over 5,000 visitors and more than 30 activities, this fifth edition of G-Night confirmed its role as one of Lugo’s most vibrant science outreach events.

Showcasing Wireless Energy for Space

Among the highlights of this year’s edition were the European projects presented by researchers from USC’s Escola Politécnica Superior de Enxeñaría including RePowerSiC. Funded by the EIC Pathfinder programme of the European Commission, RePowerSiC is developing an innovative system that combines high-power laser technology with silicon carbide (SiC) converters to enable efficient wireless transmission of energy in space. This breakthrough holds the potential to power satellites, spacecraft, and missions exploring shadowed regions such as the dark side of the Moon.

At the Lugo event, the project presented its vision for this new paradigm of space energy through interactive demonstrators, giving visitors a chance to engage directly with the concepts and challenges of beaming energy across vast distances.

Researchers Connecting with the Community

Representing the project in Lugo were Enrique Comesaña Figueroa, senior lecturer at USC and specialist in semiconductor device simulation and photovoltaic/laser power converter modelling, and Daniel Nagy, professor at USC and expert in TCAD tool development for advanced semiconductor devices. Their participation allowed the local community to meet the people behind the science and to understand how global collaboration and local expertise come together to drive innovation forward.

Inspiring Future Generations

Beyond the technology itself, G-Night Lugo emphasized the value of making research accessible to all ages, from school children discovering science for the first time to families curious about how innovation impacts daily life. By sharing RePowerSiC’s goals in an open and accessible way, the team contributed to sparking curiosity, inspiring young minds, and highlighting how European collaboration is shaping the future of energy and space exploration.

The experience at G-Night Lugo reinforced RePowerSiC’s commitment not only to advancing frontier science but also to engaging with citizens, ensuring that the journey to the stars remains connected to the people on Earth.
