New Website Launch: Pioneering the Future of Space Solar Energy Harvesting

A groundbreaking new website has just gone live for the EIC Pathfinder Portfolio “In Space Solar Energy Harvesting”, a bold initiative funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC). The website offers a look at how Europe is advancing the frontiers of space-based solar energy technology. Nine cutting-edge projects selected under the WP2023 Pathfinder call on In Space Solar Energy Harvesting, guided by Stela Tkatchova, Program Manager for Space Systems & Technologies are part of the portfolio. These projects aim to revolutionize how solar energy is collected, transmitted, and utilized in space, focusing on low TRL (Technology Readiness Level 1–4) innovations.

The initiative is structured across four specialized Working Groups:

  • WG1 – Solar Cells: Developing novel photovoltaic technologies adapted for space.
  • WG2 – Wireless Power Transmission: Exploring advanced methods like microwave or laser-based energy transfer.
  • WG3 – In-Space Green Propulsion: Enabling sustainable propulsion using harvested solar energy.
  • WG4 – System Engineering: Integrating all systems into cohesive, scalable solutions.

The mission is clear: to strengthen the EU’s leadership and strategic autonomy in space innovation while addressing the growing demand for sustainable in-space mobility.

In addition to showcasing the projects and their goals, the new website also features a dedicated newsletter, published every 3 months, to keep stakeholders, researchers, and the public informed about the latest developments and breakthroughs.
